The VOLcano DOppler RAdar and Disdrometers (VOLDORAD) observation service

The ‘VOLcano DOppler RAdars and Disdrometers’ (VOLDORAD) observation service is a multi-sensor multi-disciplinary platform of the Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Clermont-Ferrand (OPGC) with support from the CNRS-INSU National Observation Service in Volcanology (SNOV), EPOS, Epos-France and international collaborators. The main goal is to provide the scientific community with (i) different types of radars and disdrometers capable of investigating the dynamics of volcanic plumes and ash fallout, as well as clouds or fog hydrometeors, and pyrometeors from prescribed- or wild-fire smokes; (ii) a collection of data bases from radar and disdrometer records and more advanced data products from various target sites resulting from campaigns, long-term observations or deployment during crises. In particular, the main volcanological objectives are to quantify eruptive source parameters (mass eruption rate, plume height, ash concentration, grain size distribution, sedimentation rate) and dynamic processes of explosive eruptions to improve forecast models, hazard assessment and risk mitigation. At Etna a permanent network of one radar fixedly pointing the particle emission source above the craters and several disdrometers recording the fallout on the flanks help operationally monitoring the volcano in real-time.
